Surge Protection Devices

Electrical networks can always transfer high voltage surges from the point of occurrence to distant locations. Lightning strikes , high voltage switching and inductive loads switching on the network, are the main sources of these traveling waves. Moreover, these surges can penetrate into the structure through direct lightning or electromagnetic induction , or even through the network of power service, electronic, telecommunications network or metal piping.
Surges, because of their nature of the source of production, are very transient . But considering that they can have high peaks of voltage amplitudes, equipments and devices connected to the network are very susceptible to serious damages. Traveling from the point of occurrence, surges can quickly reach to the end user points in the network.

According to IEC 61643 Standard, lightning protection in a structure is complemented by installing a secondary or internal protection system. In this system, a series of protective equipments or Surge Protection Devices (called SPD), are used to protect internal networks and equipments against lightning impacts. The system is designed to completely damp temporary surge currents and voltages in three levels, and it uses three types of SPDs accordingly. For instance, in a power supplying network in a building, these levels can be classified into main entrance, secondary branches and end-user points.

The SPD operation is so that in the event of surges, the protected network is connected to ground in a very short time (a few microseconds), and after the transient situation is passed, it backs to normal operation condition.
